A Study on Knowledge, Attitude and Practice KAP on Anemia and Socio Economic Characteristics of Rural Adolescent Girls in Odisha

Anemia is a critical public health problem in India that affects women and children throughout the lifecycle. The Govt. of India took an effort by launching the programme called “12 by 12 initiatives- addressing the problem of anemia in adolescents. Under Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Adolescent Girls SABALA programme initiated in 2011, adolescent girls are being received weekly supplementation of iron folic acid tablets and biannual de worming tablets. Recently another remarkable initiative to improve nutritional outcomes for children, pregnant women and lactating mothers, “Poshan Abhiyaan- was launched in March 2018. Despite all these programmes, the prevalence of anemia among women and Adolescent Girls is alerting. Therefore, the current study focused on knowledge, attitude and practice KAP on anemia and socio economic characteristics of Rural Adolescent Girls’ in Odisha. A one group pretest and post test design was adopted for conducting the study. 508 30 of the population girl students from one school and two 2 colleges in Banki were selected as the sample for the study. Information on socio demographic profile, history of worm infestation, menarche, menstrual problems, personal hygiene and consumption of green leafy vegetables, diet history were collected through the questionnaire. Height and weight were measured along with hemoglobin status. Paired t test was used to know the difference between pretest and post test. ANOVA for Significant difference between the sources of information and gain score of KAP, correlation coefficient between KAP, regression analysis is used to know the relationships between multiple variables of the study. The present study reflects that the difference in the mean score of the Knowledge, attitude and practice are higher after the post test than the pretest scores. Hence, it is interpreted that the planned nutrition education programme on Anemia was very effective in changing the knowledge, attitude and practice among the rural adolescent girls in a positive direction. There is significant difference between Age group, Age at menarche, family type, mother’s educational status, personal hygiene and sanitation facilities and the gain score of knowledge, attitude and practice. There is a significant difference between the family income and the gain score of the knowledge, attitude and practice of anemia at the 0.05 level of significance. Thus, it is concluded that the demographic variables would have influence over the knowledge, attitude, and practice on anemia.

Effect of Mothers Working and Non Working Status on the Nutritional Status of Pre School Children

Health and nutritional status are two crucial and interlinked aspects of human development, which in to interact with demographic variables Malnutrition a condition that occurs due to intake of inadequate amount of nutrients leading to insufficient nourishment continues to be a problem of considerable magnitude in most of the developing countries in the world. Preschool children are one of the most nutritionally vulnerable segments of the population. Nutrition during the first 5 years has not only an impact on growth and morbidity during childhood, but also acts as a determinant of nutritional status in adolescent and adult life. Global comparative data indicate that contrary to common perception, prevalence of under nutrition is highest in South Asian children. India has the highest occurrence of childhood malnutrition in the world. Malnutrition is responsible for 55 percent of all deaths of children younger than 5 years of age globally. Malnutrition makes a child susceptible to infections and delayed recovery, thus increasing mortality and morbidity. It is therefore logical to direct attention to the quality of life of the survivors Bose and Das, 2010 .

Development and Standardisation of Nutri Bar using Oats, Wheat Bran and Flax Seeds

Cardiovascular diseases continue to be the major cause of morbidity and mortality in industrialized society. Various studies indicate the consumption of a vegetarian diet or a diet high in cereal fiber appears to be associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases. Based on this, a product was developed which is not only high in fiber, low in saturated fats, high in PUFA and MUFA but also a good source of phytochemicals and antioxidant. The products were developed basic with sugar sample A, variations with jaggery sample B and artificial sweetener sample C using bajra, oats, wheat bran, flax seeds, whole green gram, almonds and walnuts. The nutritive value per 100g of the basic recipe energy – 389kcal, protein 13g, fat – 12g, fiber – 6.5g and variations were calculated. The pH and alcoholic acidity of the products were estimated using standard procedures. The products were subjected to sensory analysis through Hedonic rating test and the results revealed that sample B scored the highest. The cost of the products per 100g ranged from Rs. 9 to Rs. 14. From the results it is clear that the sample B prepared with jaggery was the most acceptable and hence, can be recommended for the patients suffering with cardiovascular diseases.

Prevalence of Anaemia among Adolescent Girls in Palani Block

July 04, 2020 0
Prevalence of Anaemia among Adolescent Girls in Palani Block

According to World Health Organisation, Adolescents are defined as the period of life spanning the age between 10 19 years. This particular period in girls has been recognised as a special period of transition from girlhood to womanhood. It is a vulnerable period in the human life cycle for the development of nutritional anaemia. Number of nutritional programmes, schemes and anaemia control programme in India had been implemented by the Government but still there is a need for prevalence. The aim of the study is to estimate the prevalence of anaemia among adolescent girls and to study the socio demographic factors associated with anaemia. A Cross sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence rate of anaemia among adolescent girls in the urban area. The data was collected from the Thiruvalluvar School in Palani Block which is located in Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu. A total of 40 school going girls between the age of 15 17 years were included in the study. Overall prevalence of anaemia was 77.1 N=40 . Where in 42.5 N=17 were mild anaemia followed by 32.5 N=13 moderate anaemia. Among the group only one student is suffering from severe anaemia 2.1 N=1 . From the selected samples majority of them were suffering from mild and moderate anaemia and fifty five percent of them revealed that four days they have bleeding in menstrual cycle history. Thus the study concludes that anemia were widely prevalent in adolescent girls. There is a need to initiate intervention actions aimed at this group in order to reduce the prevalence of anemia among anaemic girls.

Situational Analysis of Diet and Nutritional Profile of 21 to 70 Years Urban Population with Respect to BMD Impact

March 24, 2016 0
Situational Analysis of Diet and Nutritional Profile of 21 to 70 Years Urban Population with Respect to BMD Impact
The study was planned to determine Bone health in urban population-middle-aged and older people, to assess nutrition knowledge, attitude and behaviour of urban population in relation to bone health, to conduct a BMD test to find the excess of demineralization and to investigate the nutrient intake of urban population in relation to their calcium status by Food frequency and 24 hour Diet Recall method. Total 70 subjects (32 male and 38 female) were randomly selected from hospital of urban Ahmedabad city who were in between of 21 to 70 years age group. The study results revealed that aanthropometric measurements showed that majority of the subjects had BMI 25-29.9 indicating overweight. The bone mineral density test showed de-mineralization in about 77% of the subjects. 100% of the subjects were leading sedentary life which may be the cause of low bone mineral density. The maximum number of subjects (31%, N=22) who showed de- mineralization were found in the age group 31-40 years.

The food frequency result showed poor consumption of green leafy vegetables (100% of subjects showed non-frequent consumption of green leafy vegetables) and poor consumption of fruits (100% of the subjects showed non-frequent consumption of Vitamin A Rich and Vitamin C Rich Fruits and only 64% showed frequent consumption of Calcium Rich Fruits). The result showed that the mean energy and protein intake of subjects was found to be low as compared to RDA. As per ICMR calcium requirement about 151% was met in case of male subjects and 136% fulfilment in case of female subjects but 60%-90% RDA could be met in case of adults and elderly subjects when looked into WHO calcium requirement. The result showed that the major source of calcium in diet was Milk & Milk Products with 90% consumption of milk and low consumption of Milk products among the subjects. Thus this study concluded that the result has revealed the sedentary life style and low calcium intake may affect Bone Mineral Density.

Study on Nutritious Multigrain Weaning Mix

March 23, 2016 0
Study on Nutritious Multigrain Weaning Mix
The study was on the development of weaning food based on wheat, chickpea and ragi and adapting the Malting, Germinating and Popping technology. The composition was done for the physico- chemical and nutritional quality of malted, germinated and popped weaning mix with the control weaning mix with similar composition. The results suggest that the weaning foods based on wheat, chickpea and ragi are nutritionally balanced and possess good growth promoting quality. The traditional technologies such as Malting, Germinating and Popping of cereals and legumes could be easily adapted to prepared weaning and supplementary foods from wheat, chickpea and ragi. Malting, Germinating and Popping have a high potential for developing low cost weaning and supplementary foods.
