Information Communication Technology and Indian Agriculture

Information Communication Technology and Indian Agriculture

Development of technology has opened new opportunities and dimensions for the agriculture sector in India. This technological advancement has enabled the country to shift from a period of traditional subsistence farming to an era of hi commercial farming. India today makes use of technology at every stage of agriculture right from production and processing till marketing. In spite of this, there still remain challenges in its complete adoption by small and marginal farmers which if suitably addressed could lead to the rapid growth of the primary sector in the future years.

Indian Economy Push and Pull Approach of Growth

February 19, 2021 0
Indian Economy Push and Pull Approach of Growth

India is the homeland of one sixth of the global population having geographical land area of about two percent of global land and generating about 3.3 of global domestic production, which in itself presents complex phenomenon of asymmetric distribution of natural resources and its impact on domestic production. The situation becomes much graver when India is ranked 74 in the list of 113 major countries in terms of food security index, whereas India is having massive food wastage of around 14 Billion approximately rupees one lac crores on annual basis as estimated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations, reflecting on the poor management of food basket within the country despite having poor food security index. According to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals MDG programme,88 million people out of 1.3 billion Indians, roughly equal to 6.7 of Indias population, lived below the poverty line of 1.25 in 2018–19 and those above the poverty line live a fragile economic life. According to World Bank Reports 10 of the global population is poor having less than 1.90 income per day. The Oxfam Report of 2020, “Time to Care “further reflects on the skewed economic resources within a negligible section of populations where India’s richest one percent owns 42.5 of the national wealth whereas only 2.8 percent of national wealth is shared by 50 of the population on the bottom of the pyramid. This is despite the fact that India is one of the fastest growing economies and poverty is on the decline in the country with close to 44 Indians escaping extreme poverty every minute as per the World Poverty Clock. World Bank has further estimated that 40 to 60 million people will fall into extreme poverty extreme poverty in 2020 compared to 2019 due to Covid 19 triggered economic shocks. The impact of Covid 19 is clearly visible on Indian economy, which contracted by 23.9 percent on year on year basis during first quarter of the financial year 2020 21. Incidentally this quarter has faced the full blown impact of Covid 19 in the form of lockdowns, lack of testing and medical facilities, large scale workforce migration and emergency response from the governments to tackle the unfolding socio economic scenario for managing the subsistence needs of the vulnerable sections of the society. The second quarter of 2020 21 has post sharp improvement with 7.5 percent contraction against 23.9 percent in the previous quarter.

This research work broadly estimated the farm level technical efficiency and elasticity of production among small scale catfish farmers in Alimosho Local Government Areas of Lagos State, Nigeria. The study in its specific objectives described the socio economic characteristics of the catfish farmers in the study area and analyzed the technical inefficiency of the catfish farmers in the study area. The study employed the use of cross sectional data from household survey conducted on a sample of 80 catfish farmers in the study areas. The data were collected with the aid of structured questionnaire and were later analyzed. The study employed the following analytical tools in order to analyze the data collected from the field Descriptive Statistics as well as Inferential Statistical Model such as Stochastic Frontier Approach. The mean age of the farmers in the study area was 44 years. Majority of the catfish farmers are married. The catfish farmers in the study are well educated. The catfish farmers in the study have large households with an average household size of 7 persons. The mean year of farming experience was 9 years for the catfish farmers. This research revealed that about 70 of the male catfish farmers were married in the study area. Among the catfish farmers, the variables that significantly influence catfish output in the study are included labour quantity employed 1 , fingerling quantity 1 and pond size 1 . The estimated sigma square s2 for the catfish farmers were 0.0209 significant at 1 . The estimated gamma g parameter of catfish farmers revealed that 99 of the variations in the catfish output among the catfish farmers in the study area are due to the differences in their technical efficiencies. The fingerling quantity was the most important variable factor of production among the catfish farmers in the study area. The RTS for the catfish farmers was 1.175 in the study areas.

Rural Infrastructure and Sustainable Development in Nigeria

This study examined rural infrastructure and sustainable development in Nigeria. Specifically, the study ascertained the extent to which poverty alleviation, basic education, rural electrification, corruption, primary healthcare, and road networking have influenced sustainable development of the rural areas in Nigeria using an econometric regression model of the ordinary least square after conducting some preliminary tests like the stationarity of the variables using the ADF Statistic and Johansen Cointegration Test. From the result of the OLS, the study revealed that poverty alleviation, basic education, rural electrification, primary healthcare, and road network have a positive impact on sustainable development in Nigeria. With the exception of road networking that was not statistically insignificant, all the other variables of the study were statistically significant in explaining sustainable development in Nigeria. The study recommends that The federal government should increase its monetary budget on education for the purpose of procuring educational materials, equipments, conducive environment for both staffs and students and also provide skill acquisition equipment for human capital development which will also lead to self employment. The government at all levels should formulate policies that aims at eliminating those negative externalities that are responsible for natural resource depletion and environmental degradation which undermines sustainable development in Nigeria. Government should also step up a well supervised expenditure on basic infrastructures, poverty alleviation, basic education, rural electrification, fight against corruption, primary healthcare, and road networking. This is because they have been found to influence productivity of the rural dwellers and also affect sustainable development.

Crop Insurance Schemes in India A Glance

Agriculture is a main stay of Indian economy. About fifty percent population of India is dependent upon agriculture sector for their sustenance notwithstanding its reduced share in GDP of India. Agricultural production is frequently affected by natural disasters like floods, earthquake, drought, cyclone etc. these events severely affect the income of the farmers through loss in agricultural production as these events are beyond the control of farmers. With the commercialization of agriculture, magnitude of loss due to these events is increasing. The important strategy which can effectively address the risk to output and farm income is agriculture insurance. Since independence the various agriculture insurance schemes have been introduced in the country. The main objective of this paper is to examine the growth and performance of agriculture insurance in India. The farmers who have insured their crops during the rabi season were 78362063 and during kharif season were 192794173 from 1999 00 to 2015 16 under the NAIS.

Determinants of Income Inequality Among Cooperative Farmers in Anambra State

March 26, 2019 0
Determinants of Income Inequality Among Cooperative Farmers in Anambra State

This study examines determinants of income inequality among cooperative farmers in Anambra State. The study, modeled variables like farmers efficiency, technology, market proximity, credit obtained, farm size, soil fertility, crop type, input supply and agric extension services using descriptive and inferential statistics. The population of this study was made up of 298 members of selected cooperative societies in Anambra State and a sample of 171 was determined for the study using Taro Yamane formula. A structured questionnaire was administered to 171 respondents but only 115 responded to the questionnaire. The data collected using the questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that apart from market proximity which was not significant, all other factors farmers efficiency, technology, credit obtained, farm size, soil fertility, crop type, input supply and agric extension services contributed significantly to the farmers income. This study therefore recommends that The government should carry out a public enlightenment campaign on the potentials of agricultural cooperatives as sustainable approach for reducing income inequality through synergy and emphasis should be placed more on cooperative education as requirement for growth and development since most of the people in the target areas has low educational background. Effect of Monetary Policy on Economic Growth in Nigeria

March 18, 2019 0
Effect of Monetary Policy on Economic Growth in Nigeria

The chequered history of the Nigeria monetary policy has created a visible asymmetry in the two known monetary regimes before and after SAP in the country. Years after the Structural Adjustment Programme SAP , the Nigeria economy grew to become the strongest economy in Africa and suddenly plunging into recession, a situation that have adversely affected the growth and development of the economy by ways of rising unemployment rate, soaring poverty and swollen external debt, thus suggesting that the failure of the monetary policy in curbing price instability has caused growth instability as Nigerias record of growth and development has become very poor. This study therefore examines the effect of monetary policy on economic growth in Nigeria using secondary data covering the period of 1980 2017 that were sourced from the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin. The models estimates were estimated via multiple econometric model of the ordinary least square to ascertain the effect of money supply, credit in the economy, interest rate on credit, infrastructure, inflationary rate, external debts, price index on growth in Nigeria. The results show that money supply, interest rate on credit, infrastructure and external debt were statistically significant in explaining its impacts on economic growth while other variables used in the study were all found to be statistically insignificant in explaining the growth rate of the Nigerian economy. The study recommends among others that for effective operation of the monetary policy measures in the Nigerian economy, the Central Bank of Nigeria should be granted full autonomy on its monetary policy functions. Partial autonomy should be replaced with full autonomy for the central banks in the developing economies at large which is invariably subjected to government interference and its politics.
