Polycystic Ovary Syndrome A Review

June 18, 2021 0
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome A Review

Polycystic ovary syndrome PCOS is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder in premenopausal women. Heterogeneous by its nature, PCOS is defined as combination of signs and symptoms of androgen excess and ovarian dysfunction in the absence of other specific diagnoses. The etiology of the syndrome remains unknown, but evidence suggests that PCOS might be a complex multigenic disorder with strong epigenetic and environmental influences, including diet and lifestyle factors. It affects 8 to 13 of reproductive aged women. Polycystic ovary syndrome PCOS is associated with hormonal, biochemical disturbance and adverse cosmetic, reproductive, metabolic, and psychological consequences, resulting in reduced health related quality of life HRQoL . The most recent international guidelines set lifestyle management as the cornerstone of the PCOS treatment.

Predictive Value of the Oxidative Stress Indices in Syrian Women with Threatened Abortion

After 10 years of increasing conflict and violence in Syria, women face significant challenges associated with lack of adequate access to maternal health services, threatening their lives along with their immediate and long term health outcomes, among them miscarriage, which has been increasing dramatically. Our aim was to assess whether serum total antioxidant TAS capacity and total oxidant status TOS altered during first trimester pregnancies with vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain, and to investigate the accuracy of these biomarkers in the prediction of miscarriage. In this cross sectional study, A group of pregnant women with vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain n=29 served as patient group and a control group of healthy pregnancies n=30 were included. All of the participants in the two groups were matched for age and gestational age. All pregnant women were recruited from the Khaled Kendel hospital Sarmada, Syria, and Blood samples were collected at 6– 14 weeks from all participants for measurement of oxidative stress markers. The area under curve AUC was used to determine the predictive value of the oxidative stress indices. The mean TOS level was significantly P 0.05 higher in patients whereas mean TAS level was significantly P 0.05 decreased in patient group compared to the control group. The AUC of TOS and TAS were 0.611, 0.895, P= 0.115, 0.001 respectively. The cut off, sensitivity, and specificity of TAS were 0.98, 93.5 and 70.8 respectively. TAS can be used to discriminate between TM and the control subjects sensitivity= 0.956 P 0.0001 . Our analysis of patients presenting with threatened miscarriage in this study presents, imbalance in oxidative stress markers, we recommended supplementing of anti oxidants Throughout pregnancy. finally, Further high quality research in this area is warranted to confirm our results.

Knowledge, Attitude and Practices of Expectant Mothers on Physical Activity A Comparative Study

Pregnancy is often considered a crucial and complete metamorphic stage in a woman life. Undoubtedly as you continue your pregnancy, you will have numerous questions about various aspects of having a healthy and safe pregnancy. Being physically active during pregnancy contributes significantly towards the health and wellbeing of the mother as well as the child. The aim of the current study is understand the knowledge, attitude and practices of expectant mothers towards physical activity in pregnancy. A total of 100 expectant mothers in the third trimester, 50 of government hospital and 50 of private hospitals, were selected from different maternity hospitals across the city, Hyderabad, through random sampling. The data was collected through self administered questionnaires. Data compilation was done using Microsoft excel version 2010 and statistically analysed using chi square test. The results revealed that while majority of the expectant mothers from both the hospital settings agreed that physical activity is important during pregnancy, they reported decrease in physical activity following pregnancy which may be attributed to various reasons like the lack of advice from health care providers regarding physical activity majorly among the government hospital women and reported barriers like fatigue and pregnancy discomfort, lack of time and fear regarding the safety of physical activity during pregnancy. It was observed that greater number of expectant mothers of the government hospital performed adequate physical activity when compared to their counterparts. Thus, the study concludes that although there was no statistically significant difference in knowledge regarding the guidelines for physical activity in pregnancy yet the expectant mothers of government hospitals were more physically active than that of expectant mothers of the private hospital.

Effectiveness of Erythinae variegata juice on dysmenorrhoea among final year nursing students

Background: Dysmenorrhea refers to the occurrence of painful menstrual cramps of uterine origin. Dysmenorrhea has been estimated to be the greatest cause of time lost from work and school in the India.

The study aim was to assess the effectiveness of Erythina variegata juice on dysmenorrhea among final year nursing students (B.Sc & DGNM). Methods: A pre experimental research design was carried out in Vinayaka Missions College of Nursing at Puducherry. The 30 sample was selected based on convenient sampling technique.

The pretest was conducted by using visual analogue pain scale during menstrual cycle with dysmenorrhea. As an intervention of Erythina variegata juice was given to the same group prior to menstrual cycle on complete 5 days. Results : After the collection of posttest, the collected data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Results shown that the '˜t' value is 5.133 and '˜P' value is <0.000, it’s highly significant. Conclusion: The study found that Erythina variegate juice is more effective for the dysmenorrhea.

Pregnancy Outcomes and Risk Factors among Adolescents in Buea Health District, Southwest Region, Cameroon: A Comparative Study

Despite a global progress recorded in reproductive health education, adolescent pregnancy remains high especially in low-income countries including Cameroon. This study assessed pregnancy outcomes and associated risk factors among adolescents in Buea Health District, Southwest Region, Cameroon. Methodology: A community-based descriptive cross-sectional research design was used in data collection from March to June 2017.

Retrospective data from January 2014 to December 2016 from the maternity department of four randomly selected health facilities in Buea Health District were collected. Moreover, using structured questionnaire, data were collected from post-menarcheal adolescents living within the health area. Data collected were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 20.0 and were considered significant at P = 0.05. Results: The proportion of adolescent births was 16.2% (652/4031). Low birth weight infants (OR= 1.6, 95 % CI: 1.28-2.02) and preterm babies (OR= 2.4,95% CI:1.86-3.32) were the adverse fetal outcomes attributed to adolescent pregnancies.

Adverse maternal outcomes were higher in adult women than adolescent mothers (P<0.05). Unemployment (OR=2.1,95% CI:0.99-4.32), poor financial status (OR=12.1, 95% CI: 2.60-55.97), peer pressure (OR=1.3, CI:0.86-2.39), lacked knowledge of reproductive health (OR=1.79,95%CI: 1.04-2.98) and poor use of contraceptives (OR=2.24,95%CI: 1.30-3.59) were associated with adolescent pregnancy. Conclusion: Adolescent pregnancies are frequent in Buea Health District with higher probabilities of developing adverse fetal outcomes than adult pregnancies.

Unemployment, poor financial status and lack of knowledge on reproductive health were associated with the high prevalence of adolescent pregnancy thus indicating a need for approaches that promote adolescent’s involvement in family planning activities.

January 25, 2016 0
Trends Of Maternal Mortality In Damaturu, Yobe State, Nigeria
Yobe state is one of the core state in the north east geopolitical zone of Nigeria, a zone that is characterized by second highest maternal mortality in the country, after north-west. This study aimed to examine trends of maternal mortality in Yobe State, a case study of General Sani Abatcha Specialist Hospital Damaturu. One consultant gynecologist, three midwives, and forty women of child bearing age participated in the study. An Ex-post factor research design was adopted using maternity attendance record and structured interview. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistic and presented on graphs/tables.

It was identified that maternal mortality decline steadily from 2010 to 2013, but there was relative increase in 2014, both of which were associated with ante-natal care coverage and hospital deliveries. The study further identified ways of improving maternal health using provision of adequate trained health personal, and provision of essential facilities in hospitals among others. Based on these findings, it was concluded that maternal mortality decreases in yobe over the years, but the figure still remain unacceptably high. It is thus recommended that Government, Non '“ governmental organization and philanthropist to be more committed in providing modern equipments in hospitals and primary health care centres.
