Process Improvement Using Statistical Process Control in a Small Scale Industry
Different methods are used in an organization to improve productivity, one such method is Statistical process Control(SPC).Statistical process control is a collection of tools, that when used together can result in process stability and variance reduction, thereby leading to a more streamlined production process. This paper presents a case study of SPC to improve the performance of current process by reducing the variability in the dimension of parts produced, there by diminish rejections and improving the process.

By carrying out mathematical calculations and using various SPC tools, process capability study was done under existing conditions, some improvements were done in the existing welding fixture used for producing the part to improve their capabilitiy indices. In this study after the application of SPC tools and integrating the suggested changes in existing process, great improvements were seen, as such the capability indices which were 0.1.1&0.38 respectively for the existing process, increased to 1.91&1.50 respectively for the improved process, thereby representing good process performance with higher strength.

Modeling of Queue Management System in Banking Industries

August 02, 2018 0
Modeling of Queue Management System in Banking Industries
This study determined the performance measures of a queue management system in FIRST Bank Nigeria Plc; Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The variables measured include: the arrival rate and the service rate from a three server system over a given period of time of the day. Quantitative research method was employed in collecting the data.

The observed data was tested using chi-square goodness of fit test to determine if the arrival rates are Poisson distributed and the service rates are exponentially distributed. Multiple channel queuing models were used in analyses.

The mean arrival and service rates were 10.82 and 9.22 respectively, with a system utilization of 1.2. The probability of having zero customers in the system was used to determine the optimal number of servers needed in the system. It was concluded that Five (5) servers is appropriate instead of three (3) servers currently used by the establishment, using the system utilization of 1.2 to trace the probability of having zero customers in the system which was found to be 0.976 at five - servers (M=5). Five (5) server model is recommended for the establishment to reduce the total expected time customers has to wait, and that operation managers should not rely on existing queuing models only, but they should apply their discretion when a queue gets out of hand.

Productivity Improvement in a Sewing Line Through Line Balancing in a Garment Manufacturing Company in the Philippines

June 24, 2018 0
Productivity Improvement in a Sewing Line Through Line Balancing in a Garment Manufacturing Company in the Philippines
In any manufacturing company, productivity in terms of quality and cost required in doing the operation is the topmost priority to be considered. Productivity improvement was studied through the use of time and motion study and line balancing concept in one of the clusters of a sewing line in a garment manufacturing company. Series of observations in the line and direct interviews among the regular personnel involved in the operation were done including the sewers, pressers, and supervisors in charge of the assembly line.

It was noted that the average productivity rate of the selected assembly line was only seventy-one (71) percent way down below from their target output. Based on the findings of the study, plant layout was one of the contributing factors that causes bottleneck in the assembly line particularly in the pairing and aligning of cut goods. Task time involved in each process was studied and computed based on optimal number of manpower and expected productivity rate. In effect, combining the processes of pairing and aligning of cut goods in one line contributes great impact in reduction of machine requirements per process to improve the productivity rate of the company.

Utilization of Melon and Snail Shell Waste Mixtures in the Carburization of Mild Steel

March 17, 2018 0
Utilization of Melon and Snail Shell Waste Mixtures in the Carburization of Mild Steel

As long as industrial and agricultural activities go on, wastes will continue to be generated. In view of this, wastes recycling/or conversion to other reusable materials that can be utilize by another industrial set-up is fast receiving worldwide attention. In this research work, the assessment of the suitability of melon and snail shell wastes mixtures in enhancing the surface hardness of mild steel via the pack carburization method has been investigated.

The carburization process was carried out at the temperatures of 9000C, 9200C and 940oC for the soaking times of 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes respectively, and then quenched in water toharden. Thereafter, they were tempered at 2500Cfor 1 hour to relieve the residual stresses introduced into the steel specimens as a result of quenching. Standard method was adopted to determine the surface hardness of the carburized and un-carburized test specimens.

Micro-structure examination was also performed using standard metallographic techniques to observe the microstructures formed. The results of the study showed increase in the surface hardness of all the carburized steel specimens in the different carburizing media. The steel specimens carburized with 80% snail shell wastes plus 20% melon shell wastes mixture had higher hardness values than those carburized with 100% snail shell wastes only.

The maximum surface hardness values of 118VHN, 128VHN and 129VHN were obtained at thecarburizing temperatures of 9000C, 9200C and 9400C respectively, for the soaking time of 60 minutes with thespecimens carburized with snail and melon shell wastes mix. It was observed that theprocess variables (temperature and soaking time) significantly impacted on the quantity of carbon absorbed at the steel surface as depicted by the surface hardness values.

The results of the research work have established the viability of melon and snail shell wastes mixture as an alternative source of carburizers in enhancing the surface hardness of mild steel.

Wireless Control 3D Printer with a Liquid Sprinkler Product Replacing Mechanism
This paper introduces a wireless 3d printer with a liquid sprinkler mechanism for large scale production of certain types of products in industrial applications. The 3D printer can capable of producing 3 dimensional object from a designed model. Object model design by using CAD software.

The slicing software generates G-code, which gives instruction to 3d printer about its movements along three axis. Send This G-code to controller via wireless mode. 3d printer can produce a 3D object on the bed of deposition.

The final product may stick on bed of deposition. Replacement of product may cause damage in product and consuming much time for it. This problem is solved by spraying 1:1 water alcohol mixture on the end product.

Here a automatic liquid sprinkler sense the final product and automatically spraying the mixture on it.
