Tracing the Growth of Shaivaism in Jammu

September 25, 2021 0
Tracing the Growth of Shaivaism in Jammu
Within the larger pantheon of Hinduism, Shaivism is one of the major religious sects that worship Shiva as the Supreme Being. It is the one of the old religions of the east and is also known as one of the prominent religious cults of India. The doctrine which centers on the philosophical aspect of Rudra Shiva goes back through ages and it developed and flourished with time. Shaivism is not a single cult but a mixture of different cults. From prehistoric times down to the early centuries of the Christian era the annals of this cult was unluckily not prominent. The history of this cult may be traced to the beginnings of human civilization on earth, like the cult of mother Goddess. Both emerged from the fertility cult. The earliest historical record to the worship of Shiva was given by Megasthenes, a Greek ambassador, at Pataliputra about 300B.C. Dionysus and Herakles, two deities generally identified with Siva and Krishna respectively were described by him. In the Mahabhashya, Patanjali gave the reference to the Shiva bhagavatas and also describes the images of Shiva and Skanda being sold by Mauryas to raise money in the time of crisis during second century B.C. This shows the popularity of this cult. In this paper we would try to understand the evolution of Shaiva religion in the ambits of Jammu region.

Praja Parishad Movement and the Student’s Agitation in Jammu 1952 A Study

February 19, 2021 0
Praja Parishad Movement and the Student’s Agitation in Jammu 1952 A Study

The present paper throws light on the popular agitation launched by the students of Jammu in 1952 and the role of the leaders of Praja Parishad in this agitation. This paper shows how the situation became worse when on January 1952, some students of G.G.M College in Jammu demonstrated against the hoisting of the National Conference flag alongside the Indian Union flag. Therefore, the state administration came down heavily upon the student’s agitation. Though none of the Praja Parishad leaders were actively involved in the disturbances but Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah’s administration arrested many of its leaders including its President Pundit Prem Nath Dogra. However, the state authorities released the Praja Parishad leaders with the intervention of Central Minister, Gopalaswamy Ayyanger and on the advice of Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru the then Prime Minister of India.

Ethical Code of War in Ancient India

February 05, 2021 0
Ethical Code of War in Ancient India

In this present paper we will try to discuss the ancient Indic or Hindu doctrine of war and how the laws which were formulated in Indian subcontinent were helpful in maintaining the peace and harmony in society in broader context. The concept of warfare in India is as old as the Vedic civilization but when we compare the ramifications of Indian wars with that of graeco Romans and other civilizations of ancient times we find a remarkable contrast. In India there were laws which clearly mentioned that no civilian should be harmed in battles whereas warriors of other nations rejoiced in plundering massacaring the defeated foes. Even in Iliad of Odyssey we see that how after Greeks defeated Troy the people of the city were mercilessly killed while they were sleeping and entire city was put to flames.

The History of Socialism in China– Efficacy and Limit

Through the exploration of the history of Chinese socialism, this paper answers the role and changes of socialism in solving these problems from five aspects thought, movement, system, economic growth strategy, economic and social stability. It is believed that the development of socialism in China is a process from national socialism to state socialism, and then to socialism with Chinese characteristics. Finally, it is proposed that Chinas development is always in the demarcation line between socialism and capitalism. How to use capitalism to develop socialism, to ensure that the current socialism with Chinese characteristics remains unchanged, it is a new problem in China development.

The Insurgency of 1857 in British India The First war of Independence

The Mutiny of 1857 proved to be a land mark in the history of India. This Mutiny ended the company's rule. However, after the war the rule of the British Crown began. Not only common people took part in the Mutiny but also the princes, the Nawabs, the Rajas, the rulers, the Zamindars and even the Sepoys took interest in the Mutiny. During the Mutiny, the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar 1837 1862 was proclaimed as the Emperor of India. The Mutiny began on 10th May 1857 and then spread like wildfire to different parts of the country. The people and the Sepoys rose to the rebellion against the unlawful activities of the British Govt. By this Article a better understanding about the insurgency of 1857 has been made to know the actual cause behind the Mutiny and to know why the Indians felt dissatisfied with the British Govt. This Article helps us to reconstruct the History of the Mutiny of 1857, to know the nature and background of the Mutiny, the beginning of the Mutiny, the causes of the Mutiny, the spread or the main events of the Mutiny, the failure of the Mutiny and the result or the outcome of the Mutiny of 1857.

What is History The Science of the Past in Perspective

March 01, 2020 0
What is History The Science of the Past in Perspective

Some puzzles in human life are universal and cut across generations. That is why some of the very issues that boggled the minds of many people several centuries ago continue to baffle many people today. Such problems often attract the attention of scholars and generate debates among them. The meaning of the term ‘history’ and the nature of history in general are certainly some of the sensitive problems that have remained highly debatable among historians and allied scholars. In fact, the debate on “what is history ” has continued without resolution for several centuries. The term ‘history’ has been defined or explained differently by different people at different times and under different circumstances. Though these definitions or explanations have been accepted and used, the lack of unanimity on the part of historians on a common definition places students and teachers of history in a difficult situation concerning what exactly history is. We believe that in the contemporary setting, any definition or explanation given to history must be situated in a framework that is comprehensive enough to make the nature and philosophy of the discipline clear. Using both primary and secondary documents, and employing the multi disciplinary approach, this paper examines some of the important definitions or explanations that have been given to history with the view to constructing a definition or an explanation that is appropriate for history today. In its survey, the study finds that several definitions have been formulated for history over the centuries. It observes, however, that some of the definitions or explanations are inappropriate and unacceptable today in view of their inability to reveal the true nature of history and clarify the philosophy behind the study of the past. In its evaluation and conclusion, the paper appreciates that history has both art and science dimensions, and is also a practice with an avowed philosophy. Taking all these into consideration, the paper then defines or explains history in a context that is comprehensive enough to depict history as a discipline that is concerned not only with the past, but also, and more especially, with the present and the future for the development of society and the various sciences or disciplines. As a result, the study draws attention to the need to promote the serious study of history in schools.

A Study Social and Economical Impact of British Rule in India

The British principle in India for around 200 years deserted it some changeless engraving in the financial, political and social existence of Indians. Whatever improvements political, regulatory monetary, social or scholarly India saw during two centuries of British principle here were not arranged by the pioneer rulers out of any altruistic mission for the welfare of Indians however were just results of the supreme rulers bigger point of keeping their hold over India and for advancing the political, financial or material interests of their own nation. Jawaharlal Nehru has appropriately remarked that Changes came to India in light of the effect of the west yet these came nearly regardless of the British in India. They prevailing with regards to hindering the pace of those changes. He further said that the clearest actuality is the sterility of British standard in India and whirling of Indian life by it.

Burzahom Burzohama a Neolithic Site in Kashmir

February 05, 2019 0
Burzahom Burzohama a Neolithic Site in Kashmir
Kashmir perhaps possess an authentic account of its History from the very earliest period. The Neolithic site of Burzahom throws a light on the different phases of the earliest history of Kashmir. The Burzahom site is a prehistoric settlement in the village of the same name in the Valley of Kashmir, a valley located between the Karakoram and the Pir Panjal Range. It is located between 34010' N and 73054 E. It is 16 kilometers 9.9 miles to the northeast of Srinagar on the Naseem-Shalimar road.

The elevation of the site is 1,800 meters 5,900 t above sea-level. It is the northernmost excavated Neolithic site of India. The site is on an ancient Pleistocene lake bed1.The location is in a high terrace which is part of the floodplain of the Jhelum River and has Karewa soil clay formation. The site has a commanding view of the Dal Lake which is about 2 kilometers 1.2 miles away. In the Kashmiri language Burzahom means birch , a tree species that generally grows in the elevation range of 3,000 to 4,200 meters 9,800 to 13,800 ft. in the Himalayas , which is found in the excavated housing area in the form of roofing material, and thus confirming the existence of the tree even in the pre-historic Neolithic times2.

Development of Srinagar under Ashoka
Kashmir is perhaps to possess an authentic account of its History from the very earliest period. This past account of the valley, its culture and traditions, rise and fall of various Kingdoms, victory and defeats of the people have been noted carefully by the sons of its soil. Kashmir is an ancient principality. The Mahabarta and Buddhist literature refers to it as Kashmir, while for Greeks it was Kashperia. The famous chronicle of K
alhana, i-e Rajtarangni mentions about the great king Ashoha . Ashokas reign was marked by great building activity and spread of Buddhism. Ashoka setup in Kashmir many Viharas and stupas and repaired an old siva temple at Vijayesvara. This research paper is an attempt to provide detailed account of the Ashokas role in development of Srinagar Kashmir .

Re-reading Caste and Gender A Study of the Rituals of Kodungallur Sri Kurumba Bhagavathy Temple of Kerala

October 04, 2018 0
Re-reading Caste and Gender A Study of the Rituals of Kodungallur Sri Kurumba Bhagavathy Temple of Kerala

every society has a set of cultural value systems, by which its members are socialized into a desirable code of conduct which clearly distinguishes what an individual is expected to do and what not. Such value systems later find expression in various rules and norms and are explained and expanded through social practices like rituals and rites.

Hence social practices in the form of myths and rituals do not simply refer to private taste, but to assumptions by which certain groups exercise and maintain power over others. Those who manipulate and design the rituals, rites and myths will have definite set of objectives and they execute it and make them entrenched in the human psyche in such a way that the powerless majority take it as natural and universal, hence not to be questioned or changed.

This often leads to social injustice, marginalisation and exclusion of the vulnerable group. The paper is an attempt to read the sexual and caste politics, not only in the way it is designed but also in the way it is received and got modified through ages.
