Knowledge Management and Institutional Development in a Recessed Economy Focus of Selected Medical Centres in Edo State, Nigeria

Poor management of knowledge by the management of government owned institutions and establishments has immensely contributed to the current recession in the Nigerian economy has necessitated the determination of the nature of relationship that exists between knowledge acquisition and the competitive advantage of selected medical centres in Edo State. Survey research design was adopted for the study, a total population of 355 was used for the study, Krejcie and Morgan 1970 sampling technique was used for the study, the data collection tool employed by the researchers was the questionnaire, while the analysis of the data was done using the pearson product moment correlation coefficient analysis. The findings revealed that there is a strong positive relationship between knowledge acquisition and the competitive advantage of selected medical centres in Edo State. The researcher therefore concluded that the acquisition of more knowledge by doctors and nurses from knowledge based economies like India where their medical facilities are more sophisticated than that of Nigeria could impact the competitive advantage of the hospital where they work. It was against this backdrop that the researchers recommended that medical doctors and nurses of the institutions of study should be frequently sent on training programmes, including the money for training programmes in the annual budget of these institutions and partnership of these institutions with other medical centres overseas where their medical facilities are more sophisticated than that of Nigeria.

Moving towards Better Corporate Governance in India An Analysis of the Uday Kotak Committee on Corporate Governance

Moving towards Better Corporate Governance in India An Analysis of the Uday Kotak Committee on Corporate Governance

Corporate governance is the involvement of different stakeholders such as shareholders, the board of directors, and the companys management in determining the performance of the company and direction. In a business, the relationship between the owners and, as a result, the managers must be strong, and there should be no conflict between the two. This paper seeks to summarize the recommendations of the report submitted by the committee on corporate governance to SEBI. The committees report nominated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India under Uday Kotaks chairmanship represents a significant milestone in Indian corporate governance. On 5 October 2017, the SEBI Committee on Corporate Governance, headed by Mr. Uday Kotak, formed on 2 June 2017, recommended major changes to existing regulations. Coming almost two decades after Indias first corporate governance initiative, in the form of the CII Code released in 1998, the committees recommendations have upped the governance ante. They also built on the strong foundation laid by the efforts of previous committees entrusted with the issue, as well as the legislative and regulatory changes that resulted. The primary objective of this paper is to analyze the Uday Kotak Committee Report on Corporate Governance in India. For the purpose of the research work, secondary data was used to explain the committee report on corporate governance. This paper also explains the basis concept of corporate governance. The boards composition, its independence and functioning, the involvement of auditors, shareholder engagement and improvement of corporate reporting are the subject of several recommendations. Some of the most important reforms include an increase in the size of the board of listed companies to six members, ensuring that at least half of the listed boards of directors be independent.

Trade Liberalization and Trade Flows in Nigeria An Aggregated Analysis

October 18, 2018 0
Trade Liberalization and Trade Flows in Nigeria An Aggregated Analysis

This study examines the impact of trade liberalization and trade flows in Nigeria using an econometric regression model of the Ordinary Least Square OLS . From the result of the OLS, it is observed that trade flows and export subsidies have a positive relationship with economic growth. This means that when trade flows and export subsidies are increasing, it will bring about more growth in Nigerian economy. On the other hand, import tariffs, import quotas and export taxes have a negative impact on economic growth in Nigeria.

This means that if import tariffs, import quotas and export taxes are falling, there will be increase in economic growth. From the empirical work reviewed, some authors argued that trade liberalization and trade flows is positively related to economic growth while some authors argued that it is negatively related. The findings of the study also show that trade flows, import tariffs, import quotas and export taxes are statistically significant in explaining the Nigerian economy while export subsidy is statistically insignificant.

The study therefore recommends that government should encourage import liberalization through reduction in tariff rates, gradual removal of Non-Tariff Barriers NTB , outright banning of certain goods which will ensure that our imports, following trade liberalization, is directed mainly on intermediate and capital goods. Imports of consumables would be brought to nil and therefore there would be a corresponding increase in the production of competitive import. Finally, the government should vigorously seek to improve the international stand of the economy with other economies of the world so as to enlarge the market for Nigerian exports.

It should also re-orient its policy towards the external sector and ensure that the sector contribute optimally to output growth.

Impact of Tourism Consumption on the Social Development of Host Communities in Cross River State, Nigeria

This study examined the impact of tourism consumption on the social development of host communities in Cross River State, Nigeria. The study is a descriptive survey on a sample of 400 respondents from the host communities. Data obtained for the study were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics like the percentages, mean, standard deviation and regression analysis. Findings revealed that tourism consumption has significant social impact on the host communities.

The quality of life of the host communities is said to have improved by tourism, thereby leading to an overall improvement in the standard of living of the host communities through the provision of facilities for Tourism purposes. On the negative perspective attitudes such as smoking, drug abuse and crime which are not consistent or in line with morality abide in the studied tourist destination. It was found that the cost of enjoying tourism products and services are relatively high that the poor cannot afford the cost of visiting tourist sites and hotels.

Based on the analysis and findings of the study the following recommendations are made even though it is a difficult task to control the social activities of individuals generally, stakeholder and regulators of tourism in the host communities should make serious efforts to come up with tourism consumption guidelines which should be monitored and enforced. The state government should come up with standard social frameworks that must be established at the development stages to preserve and protect social and cultural values of the host communities.
