Socio Cultural Analysis of Conflict between Farmers and Herdsmen in Ondo State

Violent conflict between farmers and herdsmen in Nigeria has assumed a dangerous dimension in recent years causing thousands of lives and economic losses. The reoccurrence of this conflict posed greater challenges and concern among authorities and the citizenry of Nigeria. Many factors have been attributed to this which include among others climate change, competition for scarce land resources, global warming also caused available space water to dry up, the collapse of old traditional negotiation mechanisms between groups, encroachment by farmers, and other government nongovernmental activities on cattle routes, etc. The conflict which was prevalent in the northern part of the country has increased spreading throughout Nigeria, most especially some parts of southern states, namely Oyo and Ondo. Therefore, this paper examined the socio cultural analysis of the conflict in Ondo State using a secondary source of data collection. The paper recommended restoration of traditional negotiation mechanisms between farmers and herdsmen, enhanced harmonious relationship between the groups, synergy among various security agencies, establishment and resuscitation of abandoned cattle ranching reserves, the establishment of a joint farmers herdsmen forum to facilitate proper dissemination of information towards curbing the conflict.

Understanding of the Importance of Mother Tongue Learning

November 05, 2020 0
Understanding of the Importance of Mother Tongue Learning

Mother tongue is valuable due to several reasons. Mother tongue is vital in framing the thinking and emotions of people. Learning to speak in the mother tongue is very necessary for a child’s comprehensive development. Being fluent in the mother tongue, which is also known as the native language, benefits the child in numerous ways. It associates him to his culture, ensures enhanced cognitive development, and supports in the learning of other languages. A child first comprehends what is around them through the language they hear their mother communicating in from before they are born and thought their lives. Many children across the developing world are learning very little in school, a reality that can be linked to teaching that is in a language they do not fully understand. It is a practice that leads to limited or non existent learning and acquisition of knowledge and skills, alienating experiences, and high drop out and repetition rates. To improve the quality of education, language policies need to take account of mother tongue learning. Models of education which ignore the mother tongue in the early years can be unproductive, ineffective and have a negative effect on children’s learning. Mother tongue education at least in early years can enable teachers to teach, and learners to learn more effectively.

Utilisation of Traditional Medication for the Treatment of Vaginal Infection among Women of Reproductive Age in Makurdi Metropolis of Benue State, Nigeria

A vaginal infection VI is a common problem affecting many women of reproductive age in developed and developing countries. This infection can cause vaginal discharge, discomfort, and also vaginal smell, difficulties to conceive, discrimination among others. However, little studies have been done on the utilisation of traditional medication for the treatment of vaginal infection, hence the necessity for this study. The study adopted a qualitative and a quantitative method with the use of a structured questionnaire. The accidental sampling technique was used with a visit to 6 traditional treatment centres, in Makurdi metropolis. Using this method, twenty five women of reproductive age participated in semi structured interview face to face or by telephone, and 354 women that patronised the traditional medication answered the structured questionnaire about their experience of recurrent vagina infection. The SPSS was used to analyse the quantitative data and presented in a simple percentage. The inferential statistics the Pearson correlation moment was used. It was found among others that different categories of women with different socioeconomic status utilised traditional medication in the treatment of vaginal infection in the area. The only variation was that the educated, the middle and the high income women utilised traditional therapy after a recorded failure of orthodox therapy, while uneducated and low income women utilised traditional medicine as a first line of call. The study also revealed that the failure of the conventional health facilities to treat the infection, high cost and the effectiveness of traditional medication influenced women decision to utilised traditional medication. It was also found that the disease has both physical and social effect on women. Base on this, it was recommended among others that the WHO, stakeholders in the health sector should provide basics health facilities for the prevention and treatment of this infection, sensitizing women on the proper hygienic health practices, incorporation of traditional medication into conventional medicine.

Marginalized and Institutionalized Elderly Women Issues and Concerns

Marginalized and Institutionalized Elderly Women Issues and Concerns

Ageing women make up a significant proportion of the worlds population and their numbers are growing. Poverty is inherently gendered in old age when older women are more likely to be widowed, living alone, with no income, with fewer assets of their own, fully dependent on the family for support and living in old age home. He is a man exploited by the social and economic traditions of this country. He does not believe in God, Rebirth, Soul, and Holy Books teaching separatism, Fate and Heaven because they have made him a slave. He does believe in humanism.
