Social Reform Movement in Modern Mithila A Historical Study

The aim of the social reform movements in Mithila has been mainly to eradicate the evils from the society and it was also partially successful. As a result of these movements a public opinion was created against social evils among the citizens. Womens education came into vogue and expanded rapidly. These movements played an important role in the elimination of sati. These movements created a suitable environment and created awareness among the people to prevent curtains, widow marriage and abolition of child marriage, played an important role in relaxing the effects of untouchability and casteism. Due to the influence of these movements, the government also tried to end various evils by creating much social legislation. There was a small ban on drug abuse and programs of prohibition of drugs were made. Religious superstitions and fidgeting were reduced and sentiments of religious equality were encouraged. There was a slight decrease in the practice of dowry.
