Tracing the Growth of Shaivaism in Jammu

Tracing the Growth of Shaivaism in Jammu
Within the larger pantheon of Hinduism, Shaivism is one of the major religious sects that worship Shiva as the Supreme Being. It is the one of the old religions of the east and is also known as one of the prominent religious cults of India. The doctrine which centers on the philosophical aspect of Rudra Shiva goes back through ages and it developed and flourished with time. Shaivism is not a single cult but a mixture of different cults. From prehistoric times down to the early centuries of the Christian era the annals of this cult was unluckily not prominent. The history of this cult may be traced to the beginnings of human civilization on earth, like the cult of mother Goddess. Both emerged from the fertility cult. The earliest historical record to the worship of Shiva was given by Megasthenes, a Greek ambassador, at Pataliputra about 300B.C. Dionysus and Herakles, two deities generally identified with Siva and Krishna respectively were described by him. In the Mahabhashya, Patanjali gave the reference to the Shiva bhagavatas and also describes the images of Shiva and Skanda being sold by Mauryas to raise money in the time of crisis during second century B.C. This shows the popularity of this cult. In this paper we would try to understand the evolution of Shaiva religion in the ambits of Jammu region.

Praja Parishad Movement and the Student’s Agitation in Jammu 1952 A Study

February 19, 2021 0
Praja Parishad Movement and the Student’s Agitation in Jammu 1952 A Study

The present paper throws light on the popular agitation launched by the students of Jammu in 1952 and the role of the leaders of Praja Parishad in this agitation. This paper shows how the situation became worse when on January 1952, some students of G.G.M College in Jammu demonstrated against the hoisting of the National Conference flag alongside the Indian Union flag. Therefore, the state administration came down heavily upon the student’s agitation. Though none of the Praja Parishad leaders were actively involved in the disturbances but Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah’s administration arrested many of its leaders including its President Pundit Prem Nath Dogra. However, the state authorities released the Praja Parishad leaders with the intervention of Central Minister, Gopalaswamy Ayyanger and on the advice of Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru the then Prime Minister of India.

Ethical Code of War in Ancient India

February 05, 2021 0
Ethical Code of War in Ancient India

In this present paper we will try to discuss the ancient Indic or Hindu doctrine of war and how the laws which were formulated in Indian subcontinent were helpful in maintaining the peace and harmony in society in broader context. The concept of warfare in India is as old as the Vedic civilization but when we compare the ramifications of Indian wars with that of graeco Romans and other civilizations of ancient times we find a remarkable contrast. In India there were laws which clearly mentioned that no civilian should be harmed in battles whereas warriors of other nations rejoiced in plundering massacaring the defeated foes. Even in Iliad of Odyssey we see that how after Greeks defeated Troy the people of the city were mercilessly killed while they were sleeping and entire city was put to flames.
